Описание: HOW YOUR TOOTHBRUSH BECAME A PART OF THE PLASTIC CRISIS Toothbrush design is little changed from its earliest form. The biggest difference is in the materials: toothbrushes are now all made of at least some plastic. Take a tour of the humble toothbrush and find out how it affects the environment. At first, years ago, it was just an occasional piece of plastic trash that Kahi Pacarro, the founder of Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, picked up on the beach cleanups he organized around the state. A straw here, a takeout container there. But one day Pacarro spotted something particularly surprising in the beach detritus: a toothbrush. Now, in any given Hawaii beach cleanup, he says, it’s not uncommon to pick up 20 or even 100 toothbrushes. The reason is simple. The total number of Plastic Toothbrushes being produced, used, and thrown away each year has grown steadily since the first one was made in the 1930s. “I like to ask people, what’s the first thing you touch in the morning? It’s probably your toothbrush,” says Pacarro. “Do you want the first thing you touch every day to be plastic?” For centuries, the basic toothbrush was made from natural materials. But during the early 20th century, the giddy early days of plastic innovation, manufacturers started substituting nylon and other plastics into the design—and never looked back. Plastic has so fully infiltrated toothbrush design that it’s nearly impossible to clean our teeth without touching a polymer. And because plastic is essentially indestructible, that means nearly every single toothbrush made since the 1930s is still out there in the world somewhere, living on as a piece of trash. Now, some designers are looking for ways to reimagine this crucial, classic object in a way that puts less stress on the planet. But to find solutions to the toothbrush conundrum, we have to understand how we got here. The best invention of all time? It turns out people really love having clean teeth. In MIT’s 2003 Lemelson Innovation Index survey, the Electric Toothbrush rated higher than cars, personal computers, or cellphones as the innovation respondents couldn’t live without. A plastic-free future? “It’s quite remarkable, actually, that the design has stayed so similar throughout the years,” says Charlotte Fiell, a design historian from the U.K. “Basically, the function hasn’t changed, has it?” But now designers are beginning to ask: Can we remake this essential object using little or no plastic? The American Dental Association suggests that everyone replace their toothbrushes every three or four months. At that rate, brushers in the U.S. alone would go through over one billion toothbrushes each year. And if everyone around the world followed those recommendations, about 23 billion toothbrushes would get trashed annually. Most are traditional Bamboo Toothbrushes, but some 55 million U.S. brushers use electric toothbrushes each year, so some number of those plastic-handled, battery-containing objects also end up in the waste stream each year. Many toothbrushes are unrecyclable because the composite plastics most are now made of are difficult, if not impossible, to break apart efficiently. In response, some companies have pivoted back to natural material, like wood or boar bristles. Bamboo handles can solve part of the problem, but most of the bamboo brushes on the market still have nylon bristles, so at least that part of the brush has to be thrown away. Other Special Toothbrushes, like the Radius, pack more, sturdier bristles into their heads. That helps them last longer so they need to be replaced less often—only two brushes a year instead of four. Some companies have gone back to a design that was originally introduced nearly a century ago: toothbrushes with removable heads. Goodwell, in Portland, Oregon, produces metal handles it hopes brushers will keep for years. The head pops out when the bristles wear down, and a new one snaps in, reducing the total amount of waste to less than 30 percent of a normal brush, says Patrick Triato, one of the company’s founders. A Smart Socket is like a power-point adapter – it fits between your power socket and the appliance you wish to plugin. At its most basic level, it simply turns things on and off. But, when connected to a smart home platform, it becomes a very nifty device. They are considered ‘smart’ because they let you control your appliances from an app on your phone from anywhere. Installation is permanent and also more involved, but the results make this extra effort worthwhile. Wired or Wireless Smart Switch? If you decided that smart Light Switches are your best bet, you need to determine whether to go wired or wireless. A wireless switch makes perfect sense if you’re renting. You won’t need to carry out any work on the wiring and switching already in place. Many smart switches come with a magnetic mount, meaning you won’t even need to physically fix it on the wall. Although the selection of wireless switches is limited, there are still options from the major industry players. If you’re a homeowner, wired smart switches call for the current switches to be swapped out. In return, you’ll be rewarded with a fully integrated method of controlling your lights. Описание: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FDF AND API PRODUCTS? In the pharmaceutical industry, you might hear the terms “FDF” and “API” frequently used in reference to products. Within the industry itself, of course, we understand this type of jargon, but we certainly can see how the general public would feel overwhelmed looking at those kinds of terminology abbreviations. For reference, they mean, respectively, “finished dosage form” and “active pharmaceutical ingredient.” At Tedor Pharma, we may be leaders in pharmaceutical formulation for our clients, but we also want to be understandable to laypeople and the rest of the public. The world of solid-dose production can indeed be quite technical and involved, but it means nothing if our work is so opaque as to be confusing. In that case, we will be using this article to discuss the difference between FDF and API and how these two pieces of the pharmaceutical formulation process are interrelated. WHAT IS AN FDF? As stated previously, FDF stands for Finished Dosage Form, and it refers to the actual finalized drug product that is meant for consumption. FDFs can take a variety of forms, including solid tablets or capsules, a liquid solution, or another type. FDFs usually contain an API alongside various inactive ingredients. In this case, then, the next time you see “FDF” in reference to pharmaceuticals, you will know the term simply refers to the physical form of the drug that was produced for sale at any pharmacy where customers shop. WHAT IS AN API? We just referenced API, or active pharmaceutical ingredients, but we can get into some more detail here. At an extremely basic level, an API is the component of the drug that enacts the intended effect on the consumer’s body. For instance, the drug acetaminophen is the active ingredient in a whole host of over-the-counter pain-relief medications. Recombinant Diabetes API contrast with inactive ingredients, those elements of a drug that are necessary for its production but have no effect on the condition the consumer is trying to change. Dye is an example of an inactive ingredient that might be used in a pill to lend it a certain color. Although inactive ingredients play no role in the drug making you feel better, they can have side effects on the body. Read the possible side effects on the next container of prescription medications you get to see how these ingredients might affect you. An API also can send information from one system to another. A healthcare provider organization, for example, can input a patient’s information into a system that works with insurance companies and nearly automatically determine the patient’s coverage for a specific procedure or medication. That is enabled by an API. APIs have a big part to play in health IT interoperability in the years ahead, especially as the data exchange rules of the 21st Century Cures Act encourage their standardization and proliferation across the healthcare ecosystem. Here, some API experts point the way forward for APIs and describe where they can be of most help. Medical Devices range from simple tongue depressors and bedpans to complex programmable pacemakers, and closed loop artificial pancreas systems. Additionally, medical devices include in-vitro diagnostics (IVD) products, such as reagents, test kits, and blood glucose meters. Certain radiation-emitting electronic products that have a medical use or make medical claims are also considered medical devices. Examples of these include diagnostic ultrasound products, x-ray machines and medical lasers. The FDA considers a product to be a device, and subject to FDA regulation, if it meets the definition of a medical device per Section 201(h) of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. To determine if your product meets the definition of a medical device, you should define the intended use and indications for use of your product. Once you have defined the intended use and indications for use of your product, you can determine if the product meets the definition of a medical device.

Описание: The Key to Reliable Electrical Heat Tracing is Proper Thermal Insulation Electrical Heat Tracing A significant number of industrial and commercial piping systems require temperature maintenance. Both freeze protection and process temperature maintenance can indicate the need for heat tracing. Sometimes temperature maintenance can simply be accomplished by installing only thermal insulation. In other cases, however, temperature maintenance must be provided by the addition of heat in the form of electrical heaters, steam tubes, or hydronic fluids. This article will mainly focus on Electrical Heat Tracing, the choice of many of new installations in both industrial and commercial projects. In 1960, about 95% of heat tracing was steam and in 1995, because of improvements in electrical tracing, that number dropped to between 30% and 40% of new installed tracing. Reliability Requirements To make use of a visual symbol, electrical heat tracing is like a stool with 3 legs (see Figure 1). One leg is “heating cable quality” (heat trace cable and thermal insulation); the second leg is “engineering quality” (choosing the proper wattage, thermal insulation, ambient temperature, safety factors, etc.); and the final leg is “installation quality,” or the quality of the installation of the piping system and heat tracing system. If any one of the legs is compromised, the system may not provide expected performance. Break any one of the legs and the system will not “stand.” An electric Self Regulating Heat Cable is a wire cable that produces heat, also referred to as heat trace cable. Heating cable can be used in a wide range of applications for the home, such as floor heating, heat loss replacement, pipe freeze protection, roof and gutter deicing, and snow melting. There are two different kinds of cables, self-regulating and constant wattage, and both can serve the same purpose, although the application will typically determine the best solution for the job. Are heat tape, heat cable, and heat trace different? Before we dive deeper into the differences between self-regulating and constant wattage cable, there is an important clarification that should be made in regard to the heating cable - whether it is self-regulating or constant wattage cable. Serial Electric Floor Heating Cable, specifically in the application of pipe freeze protection and roof and gutter deicing, is commonly referred to as heat tape with the assumption that they are two different types of systems. However, “heat tape” is simply a slang term that has gained wide usage in the industry, but is actually just another term for heat cable. Another common term that is used interchangeably in the specific context of pipe freeze protection is “heat trace”. When dealing with delicate substances or temperature-sensitive products, companies must take care to take proper temperature control measures in their facilities. Most common people think of temperature control as the simple adjustment of their home thermostat. However, while this does constitute an example of temperature regulation, the world of temperature control is far more complex and involved than one would initially imagine. In order to properly control a facility’s warmth and cooling ranges, temperature control systems are a must for any business or company. There are several different types of Temperature Control & System. The simplest of these is referred to as an “On or Off” system. In this system, the device’s mechanisms detect the temperature of a facility, turning its heating components on when the temperature is too low, its cooling components on when the temperature is too warm, and switching itself off entirely when the temperature is at its desired point. This yields rather imprecise temperature regulation, and an “On or Off” system cannot be used when dealing with very sensitive materials. When more exact temperature control is required, it is beneficial to employ a system that can regulate the precise amount of heat or cooling properties that is produced by the device. Temperature controllers such as PID controllers or proportional controllers are capable of detecting the discrepancy between the desired temperature and the actual temperature. These temperature controllers can then produce the exact amount of warmth or cooling properties that will bring the facility’s temperature to its ideal point. Companies in any country can use a temperature controller made anywhere in the world if they possess a temperature conversion chart that can transpose degrees Fahrenheit, degrees Celsius, and Kelvins. Last week, anyone who pre-ordered Apple’s iPad Camera Connection Kits began receiving the iPad accessory. Описание: What is a thermostat? What is a thermostat? The Room Thermostat is a common fixture in most homes, helping to maintain an even temperature in the house all year round. In the winter, room thermostats (sometimes referred to as roomstats) prevent rooms from overheating. In the summer months, they ensure the heating system does not fire up unless the temperature of the house falls below a preset level. How do thermostats work? A thermostat is normally a control unit for a central heating boiler, but these days it can also control electric heating such as infrared panels. You choose the temperature that you would like the house to be at via a dial or a digital display on the thermostat. The thermostat then monitors the ambient temperature of the air and instructs the boiler/heating system to turn on or off accordingly. If the temperature of the ambient air is lower than the requested temperature set on the thermostat, it will fire a message to the boiler to fire up and send hot water to the radiators to heat the house. If the air temperature is too high, the Underfloor Heating Thermostat will send a message to the boiler to switch off, which obviously should result in the home cooling down. Using a thermostat will therefore ensure that the house stays at a regular temperature and rooms don’t overheat. The thermostat will ensure that the boiler keeps a constant temperature in the house, which results in an efficient heating system that will save you money on your gas bills. How much can a room thermostat save? A correctly-installed thermostat can save you £100s per year, however you have to know how to get the best out of it. For example, a pre-installed room thermostat can save about £65 for every degree centigrade you turn it down. Thermostats do not speed up the rate of heating One common misconception of thermostats is that if you turn up the dial of the thermostat, the room will heat up quicker. The rate at which a room heats up is dependent on the boiler, the size of the room, the size of the radiator and finally, how well-insulated the room is. Thermostats and draughts Roomstats are sensitive little things; if they are hit by prolonged cold draughts they will instruct the boiler to fire up. This means that they have to be positioned very carefully in the house. For example, we have seen thermostats installed in clients’ hallways just by the draughty front door. This means that they will normally be recording a lower temperature than the actual ambient temperature of the house and will instruct the boiler to fire up, using more gas. Thermostats are just part of heating controls Fan Coil Thermostats are just one part of a home’s heating controls, which normally include a programmer and TRVs. They are designed to work seamlessly with the other components, with the thermostat overriding the programmer to prevent overheating. It is important that you don’t situate your roomstat near a radiator with a TRV because they will interfere with one another – that will mean the heating may go on and off unexpectedly. New intelligent heating controls such as Nest take the idea of the thermostat much further. They allow you to set the temperature of the home from the other side of the world via your phone, but they also take into account things like direct sunlight, which in the past has manipulated the ambient air temperature. An Underfloor Heating Controller system evenly distributes heat throughout a room and this ensures a comfortable environment, with optimal energy efficiency. What's more, you will avoid the unpleasant feeling of cold feet on a winter’s day! A radiator system on the other hand, concentrates heating in one area first before it is spread across the whole room.
